Arpilleras workshop

The work with the Chilean and other arpilleras was another way of approaching the theme of art (in this case textile) and memory.

Through the arpilleras, the women recount their experiences in contexts of conflict and human rights violations, using common household materials such as needles, thread and pieces of cloth.

The Gernika Peace Museum organised the exhibition “Cosiendo Paz: conflicto, arpilleras y memoria”, a stitchers’ workshop for several months and an International Forum of stitchers.

The objective of the “arpilleras” workshop was to make several “arpilleras” in a group during the months of November 2015 to May 2016. The group of women participants made several individual pieces to familiarise themselves with this technique and then made a group piece in which they explained the situation of the region in which they live.
