The most emblematic ceremony at the Maison d’Izieu is the one which takes place on April 6 in order to commemorate the roundup of 1944 during which the 44 children and 7 adults were taken.
As well as the International day of January 27, speeches are delivered, the children and adults’ names are read by pupils, roses are placed at the foot of the 1946 plaque and a minut’s silence is observed. A Kaddish is also recited for the victims.

The Maison d’Izieu, opened by Sabine and Miron Zlatin, welcomed more than a hundred Jewish children from May 1943 to April 1944 to make them escape anti-Semitic persecution.
On the morning of April 6 1944, 44 children and 7 of their educators were rounded up and deported on Klaus Barbie’s order, one of the heads of the Gestapo of Lyon.
None of the 44 children came back ; only one adult, Lea Feldblum, survived.
Since 1994 and its opening by the French President François Mitterrand, the Maison d’Izieu is a place of remembrance, education and living which acts to prevent crime against humanity and combats all forms of discrimination.
The museum was founded in 1998 as the Gernika Museum and became the Gernika Peace Museum Foundation in 2002 with the mission of conserving, exhibiting, disseminating, researching and educating visitors in the basic ideas of the culture of peace and what it has had and has to do with the history of Gernika-Lumo (Spanish Civil War), in order to make Gernika-Lumo, Bizkaia and the Basque Country – together with the work of other organisations in the field of history and peace – a reference point (local, regional, national and international) for work in favour of peace and culture.
In recent years it has focused its work more on the aspect of memory (Spanish Civil War, the bombing of Gernika, exile and the post-war period). The Foundation offers services such as: a documentation centre specialising in the bombing of Gernika and the Civil War, an educational department, permanent and temporary exhibitions, organisation of seminars, Memoritour Gernika external guided tours and actively participates in numerous national and international networks and in several European projects.
Since 1996, the Fossoli Foundation has managed a memorial system of international importance that includes the historic site of Campo Fossoli, the Monument Museum to the Deported and, since 2010, the building that houses the ancient Synagogues of Carpi, where its headquarters are located. This important material heritage is also enriched by another more intangible one: the Study Center, made up of an interesting archive of subjective documentation, important collections of books and works of art. The primary objective of the Foundation is the protection and conservation of its heritage along with its enhancement, sustained through research, documentation, training and cultural promotion activities. The Foundation focuses especially on close collaboration with schools, developing specific educational projects and itineraries for students and teachers, organized visits to their commemorative places and also to European ones.
