Months before the military coup, the rebels had already requested military aid from Mussolini and after the coup from Hitler. As a result of these contacts, the Italian Aviazione Legionaria (AL) and the German Legion Condor (LC) were sent to fight in Franco’s service. Together with the Northern Air Force (FAN), both air units carried out more than 1000 bombing operations on Basque soil between 22 July 1936 and 18 August 1937.
The seminar analyses some of the highlights of this terror bombing campaign.
