Portraits in charcoal of the children of Izieu

Created in 2015 and exhibited since 2017

Winfried Weit, german artist born in 1945, was deeply moved by the children of Izieu’s history during his first visit in 2004. So he wanted to pay tribute to them through his art. In 2015, after he met Beate Kalrsfeld (a memory activist), he began to draw the children after photos published in the book Les enfants d’Izieu. Une tragédie juive by Serge Klarsfeld. He also sketched the six deported and assassinated adults and Sabine Zlatin and Léa Feldblum, in colour.

The artist tried to rebuild their faces, sometimes with interpretation and “reinvention” as the sharpness, the quality and the different size had made them vague.

In 2017, he donated all the portraits to the Maison d’Izieu, now exhibited in the Zlatin Gallery, the temporary exhibition area.
