A sky full of birds

The play entitled Un ciel rempli d’oiseaux, written by Antoine Choplin in 2021, pays tribute to the Romani artist Ceija Stojka, deceased in 2013.

Born in Austria in 1933, Ceija was deported at the age of 10 in Auschwitz, then Ravensbrück and Bergen-Belsen. Illiterate then self-taught woman, she learnt how to read and write in her forties in order to begin a memory work, with the writing of poems and prose. Then, around twenty years later, she began to paint more than a thousand works, inks, gouaches and acrylics on canvas or paper. Her works represent an exceptional testimony of her concentration-camp experience, against oblivion and denial, and participate in a fight against anti-Romani racism all over Europe.

This show, created from a book, lies at the crossroads between poetry, art books, novels and theatre and constitute an incarnation of Ceija Stojka’s art, through Antoine Choplin’s words, Dominique Lurcel’s directing and Juliette Savoz’s performance.
