Walls against oblivion
- REMEMCHILD -
Young people from the Barrutialde Secondary School and the muralist Mikel Aldekogarai “Kezon” created 2 murals with the message “No to war”.
The project has begun on September 14 2023 and ends on November 1 2024.
During the three months the project lasted, the Maison d’Izieu has appealed to two classes from secondary schools of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in order to conceive the Wall against oblivion. Their drawings, photographic reports and memorial objects make up this collective creation.
The Maison d’Izieu has involved two classes from the French departments of Ain and Rhône : the « artistic audacity class » of the Lycée du Bugey (secondary school in Belley) and the « Vehicle maintenance » course of the Lycée professionnel François Cevert (professionnal secondary school in Écully).
They were accompanied by Chloé Colin, photographer and video artist from the BLICK Photographie association, and Roman Kroke, interdisciplinary artist and member of the Scientific Council of Maison d’Izieu.
The « artistic audacity class » of the Lycée du Bugey, in which 27 pupils aged from 15 to 16 years old participate, is supervised by a French teacher, Mrs Isabelle Journo, and a videographer and photographer artist Chloé Colin (from the BLICK Photographie association).
The « vehicle maintenance » course of the Lycée professionnel François Cevert, which consists of 17 students aged between 17 and 18, is supervised by two teachers, Mrs Séverine Dixmerias, history, geography and French teacher, and Mrs Émeline Neel, fine arts teacher, and Mr Roman Kroke, interdisciplinary artist and member of the Maison d’Izieu’s scientific board.
In April 2023, the Maison d’Izieu appealed to two local secondary schools of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in order to contribute to the Wall against oblivion, which they accepted gladly.
On September 14 2023, a few days after the start of the school year, the Maison d’Izieu team welcomed them. During this sunny day, the pupils, their teachers and the artists working with them followed a guided tour of the house (the former Children’s Home) and the parts in the museum dedicated to the historical context and international justice.
In the afternoon, the two classes had different activities. The director of the Maison d’Izieu, Mr Dominique Vidaud, gave a lecture to the pupils of the artistic audacity class of the Lycée du Bugey about the history of the Château de Grammont. The latter is located 30 kilometers from Izieu in a village called Ceyzérieu, in the French department of Ain. Finally, supervised by the artist Roman Kroke, the pupils of the « Vehicle maintenance » course of the Lycée François Cevert collected all kinds of materials in order to create their project.
This day represented for all the official launch of the collective Wall against oblivion’s creation.
In the next three months, from September 15 to December 19, the two classes worked on their artistic project in their respective schools, while the Maison d’Izieu remained at their constant disposal for any question, precision and to follow step by step the work in progress.
On December 19, the teachers and artists sent us their final project:
- A photographic report about the château de Grammont which sheltered children from Spanish republican families and Jewish families during the Second World War.
- Memorial objects connecting the history of the children of Izieu to the pupils’ one of the « Vehicle Maintenance » course of the Lycée François Cevert.
On the eve of Christmas holidays, the models were sent to the printer in order to discover them full-size on the opening day.
